My father served as a fire fighter in the raf at bassingbourne in 53-56 he was there when the Canberra bombers arrived when the usaf pulled out.he has some great photographs of the time and will bring copies with us when we visit for you to keep.
Hope to be able to visit the museum in the not too distant future. My Dad was also in the RAF, not a fireman but was in the Canal Zone and witnessed an early Canberra crash at Kasafreet(?)
I’m very happy to have found your library. I’m writing from Los Angeles and am looking for information about the MoD Fire Brigade in the 1930s.
I am working for a new clothing company called The Lost Explorer (www.thelostexplorer.co) and we have reworked a vintage 1932 MoD fire brigade jacket into a contemporary design. Because our company is influenced by history and travel, we wanted to get the history right with this jacket.
I’d love to know if this jacket looks familiar and who exactly wore it? Also if there are any photos you have of someone wearing something like this? I know it’s a tall order but any information would be helpful as we’ve scoured the internet and come up empty until I discovered your museum.
I can send an image of the jacket if you send me an email address where you are.
Thanks so much in advance on any information you could offer.
